Well not anymore. This was so funny, I have for years been wanting a shot of this sign. This sign is just across the border at the Osyoose border crossing. I have been looking at it for years, and it was just so cool but there had been abunch of willow grown up all over it and not able to really see it very well. So, one day on the way down or back, there it was, in its full splendor and a great light as well. I just like this little guy. Pretty cute. No idea what it has to do with a drive in movie. But hey, great sign.
I like this guy alot, not sure why, maybe cuz it stood out in a strange way on the landscape. I do know where I shot this, so far away from all the other stuff. This was actually shot in Terrace BC. Yeah, really. There was an old mill here once, it got torn down. So, the city encouraged all the taggers to have their way with it. I think, but not sure they might even have had a contest. Pretty smart really as they knew it woulda been tagged anyway. This happy face is so sort of out of place, but it makes you smile some how. Supposed to I guess.
I forget where I saw this, but it must have spoke to me in some way otherwise I would not have stopped to take the photo. A pretty old traditional looking cross here, and wonder who would have put it up. I do remember it was just on the side of the road, on a hilltop, well of course on a hilltop, where else would it be. But thought it pretty cool. Pretty different from the rest of the collection so far, but still gets the same message across. To those that know the code.
Actually of course that is a loaded question, but pretty hard to have a happy place and not include Paradise. So, if you thought paradise was only a state of mind. Well it is in the state of Washington.
Yup, a real place of just over six hundred people. On highway I think 28 between Amarillo, and Lubbock Texas. I so loved this sign I mean how could you not stop. I wish in some ways it woulda been some old cool sign, but guess nobody cares about it anyway. In otherways it is sort of cool is so "official" sort of. But stuck out in the middle of this field, well, just had to be shot is all. I wanted to go into town, but my buddies buggered off and had to catch them up. This image along with all the others would look so awesome huge, I don't have the room, sixteen by twenty is the biggest I get, but wow, can you imagine some of this stuff six feet or more. Crazy.
The signs just keep on coming. I will put more up after these in a few days. Just want to keep things flowing, will finish the sign collection off by the end of the week. Most of these sign shots were taken this last summer, summer of 2012, went down into Texas and back and where I could stop, and find these jems of the road, I could not help myself. Hope you enjoy as much as I. The textures and colors of these things blow me away. Anyway, enjoy.
Ok, well I wanted to start this new edition with some color and lightness. I love the colors in this collection, I will be bringing more in shortly. But I thought this would be a grand start.
These images were shot this past summer, summer of 2012, I love the look and color in this stuff, I have printed a couple already, large, and holysmokes do they look awesome. I will follow up with some more, but just wanted this bit to get up first.
I travel alot in the states, like the roads, and what you can get for your money, mostly. The other thing is this place is full of nostalgia. If one chooses to see it that way. I do. When I see these old signs I marvel at what went into the, and the tremendous amount of pride that must have gone on the day these things were erected. They become like any showy piece though don't they. Left to rot, rust and die a long slow death. It would be so cool to travel the entire states and cut these old babies down, hang them as art in a huge place. I can't do that, so I guess I do it this way, far lighter easier to pack around. Some of the signs I do a shot that shows the place, where they are planted. Yes the sign is a good indication of what is there. Run down buildings sometimes, trash, wires, junk, nothing. There is a far deeper story in these beauties that is sure.
